NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS? WHAT ABOUT LAST YEAR'S REFLECTIONS? 2017 EDITION

2017 flew by. It was a year where missing pieces of a puzzle fell into place. It was the year I came home. Now that we're at the end, I can reflect on everything that happened and realize that I've come to a time in my life when I'm comfortably...settled.

I started my position at the Technical College System Office in January, bought my cozy cottage in February, finished my Master's degree in May, got engaged to my forever human in July, witnessed a once in a lifetime eclipse in August, and am wrapping up the year by spending time with old friends and family for the holidays.

2017 flew by, but I got to stand in the doorway of my very own home, watching familiar cars meander the streets, got to hang suspended in time in a hammock with a good book, and got to forget the world was spinning in space while I worked in my studio.

I wrote a poem a few years ago about how we are all collections of memories and scars, all constellations of individual stars, but we cannot always see how we fit together, how we merge all the pieces of ourselves underneath our skin. This year, I wrote a poem about the process of finding that fit.

Plenty of adventure lies in my future, to be sure, but now I have a home base to return to. The taste is bitter sweet because I still carry Kansas City with me in my heart, still feel safest in my childhood house, but we all wake up one morning and have that moment of, "Aha, I've entered a new phase in my life." For me, that time is now.

2017 marked the start of something new, something special.

So, goodbye, 2017. You were too good to be true. I can't wait to see where 2018 takes me...

  1. ". . . . but we all wake up one morning and have that moment of, "Aha, I've entered a new phase in my life." For me, that time is now." Such a powerful phrase that is. Yes, you are definitely ready for whatever experiences 2018 will bring. Whether you have something new start or just go a bit further into what you began in 2017, you are prepared. In my mind's eye you're already jumping into the first day new year with fun and energy. You'll be shaping a great deal of this new year, this new you. Echoing your last line, I can't wait to see where you take 2018.
